Around these parts, the waiter/waitress will typically phrase a beverage selection question like this: Hello, my name is _____ and I will be your waiter/waitress today. May I start you out with a water, tea, soft drink or other* beverage?
*Other means alcoholic type beverage.
Soft drink is how carbonated beverages are referenced in my neck of the woods. If you ask for a Coke, that is what you get, a Coke product.
We also have 2 of the greatest soft-drinks ever made that were invented and produced here in NC (in addition to Pepsi that originated here at a drugstore) that are not available everywhere, as of yet. They are called Sun-drop and Cheerwine, and you don't know what you are missing until you try one of each, or better yet, a combo of the two.

way to qoute full metal jacket! I love that movie. But I have yet to see in the history of our country, where NC was at any point its own Country!
